The chicken or the egg?

Hey all ya all,

As you all should know from my past post, we at the Jachmann house live on all cycles and one at the same time! David is on his schedule. Alex is on his schedule. Isabelle is her schedule. Alison is on her schedule.

We are all on different schedules right now.

Sometimes, we are all on the same cycle. :)

Sometimes, we are not. :(

I would love to be on David's schedule and eat, drink, work, and drive. I would love to be on Alex's schedule and play, work, and rest. I would love to be on Isabelle's cycle and sleep, eat, poop and peep. But I am not. I am on my schedule and I am premenstrual, menstrual, post menstrual. =:0

Apparently, the world revolves around ourselves sometimes. And sometimes, we revolve around the world. :/

Sometimes, it's summer. Sometimes, it's spring. Sometimes, it's fall. And, sometimes, it's winter.

I know it's been a long time since I've posted anything. I thought I would update you all on what's been going on in my life. My husband, David and I have been doing the South Beach diet for the past three months. I've been staying active--working out at the gym--as always, but I attribute my weight loss to the change in my eating choices. I've always been well educated in food and nutrition but the hard part for me was just doing what I know by making healthy choices in eating. Last time I lost weight was back in 2005 before I got pregnant with Alex. I was 220 pounds at the end of my first year of teaching at South El Monte High School, which I had gained while going to school full-time for several years at CSUN as well as student teaching and full-time teaching. It just kind of crept up on me as it happens with a lot of people. My co-worker and friend, Jen Poulsen, was doing Curves, so I bought the books, read them, and started changing my nutritional intake to what they suggested as well as applying what I learned in college nutrition classes--that I used to completely ignore! I lost 40 pounds that summer and then got pregnant, and started applying my knowledge of prenatal nutrition and continued to lose weight. Don't hate me, but I think my metabolism was at it's best when I got pregnant, and regardless of how much food I ate--healthy, of course, I continued to lose weight. In addition to that, I had stopped taking medicine that I couldn't be on while pregnant or breastfeeding, that causes an increase in appetite. So then I had a decreased appetite, but no nausea or vomiting. Yeah! I lost an additional 15 pounds during the first half of my pregnancy and then gained that 15 pounds back during my last half of pregnancy. I was not concerned, nor was my doctor, and my sister had the same type of experience with her pregnancy. So, I figured I had the same genes as her, and knew because I was still 30 + pounds overweight, it was a non-issue. So, I left the hospital the same weight, minus an eight pound baby, and still about 30 pounds overweight. I continued to lose weight, which I attribute to stress--new baby, new home, new life. I was nursing and trying to just get the most nutrient dense items into my mouth as quickly as possible before I had to care for my baby again (Edamame was my favorite snack and I drank so much water, my nurse at my well visit said my urine was the best looking she'd ever seen!). Alex was not gaining weight but maintaining weight. I was losing weight and losing my mind! After three months of nursing, supplementing, and totally stressing out over it all, I weened Alex and my weight loss started tapering off. Alex started gaining weight and started eating solids and turned out to be quite the chunky monkey! I went back on my medication that has the dreaded increase in appetite. I started putting the pounds back on and ended up at the same weight--post delivery of Alex when I got pregnant with Isabelle three years later. I, as before, lost about 15 pounds during the first half of pregnancy and gained the 15 pounds back during the last half of pregnancy. Again, normal for me, but not normal for most women. So, I was back where I started, when I had Isabelle, 30 + pounds overweight. I chose not to nurse Isabelle because I was high risk for postpartum psychosis which is more than just the normal baby blues, and worse than postpartum depression. I had discussed with my psychiatrist different medications that I could take that would not result in the same weight gain due to increase in appetite. She offered a couple of choices and my new psychiatrist through Kaiser Permanente was actually an intern who has a specialty in Women's Mental Health. She not only knew what meds I could go on for my specific condition, she had new knowledge that my previous doctor didn't have (being an old timer with no new tricks up his sleeve). She suggested two meds that she felt would work well for my disorder as well as being OK to be on during my next pregnancy! Whoot, whoot! I was super excited that I wouldn't have to risk my mental health for the physical health of my baby! So, I started feeling better as she played with my "cocktail of drugs", as I lovingly refer to it, and escaped postpartum psychosis with lots of therapy sessions. I managed to improve my mental health as well as my daughter Isabelle's physical health. Yeah! Success number one! So, I started going back to the gym and working out. I managed to maintain weight for a while and then my weight started creeping up again. I knew that it would be easier to maintain then to gain it all back and have to go on a strict diet, so I looked into the South Beach diet. I had all the books that I had read many moons ago when I was on Curves, because there was a lot of South Beach Living items in the grocery store. So, I compared the two diets in 2005 and again in 2010. I decided this time to go South Beach style. They are very similar, I just felt South Beach was easier to follow because you had a list to go by and you didn't have to count carbs, as I had done when I was on the Curves meal plan. So, I asked my husband to join me on the diet journey, as he had done before in 2005, and he agreed to be my South Beach buddy. :) So, my start weight this time was 173 and over the past three months, I have lost 28 pounds! Yeah for me! I'm now at the same weight as I was when we moved here to Cali in 1996. I only know this because I need to renew my license at the DMV for the first time since 1996! :) My license says I weighed 145 when I was a three month newlywed! And I have passed my weight loss goal of 148 and am now 145 again. Whoot, whoot! Success number two! So, my next challenge is to bump up my cardio and start walking-jogging-running. I haven't done any of these since I got prego with Isabelle. If anyone in the Corona area is interested in doing it with me, I'm totally behind you 100%. I have been doing group exercise classes at my friend, Sabrina Anderson's gym, "4 everyBODY fitness". She was working for Sue Robinson at Fire-House Fitness until Sue closed down shop. Sue still teaches classes through the City of Corona Parks and Comm Service if anyone is interested. Sabrina is the queen of Zumba. If you love to dance, come try a class for free. She teaches many other classes as well. Just thought I'd put the plug in for my favorite workout queens! :) They both let me babysit at their gym in exchange for exercise classes. I workout for my physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health. It makes me happy in all aspects of my life. You might think that's crazy, but it's true, none the less! Now that I'm at my goal weight, my new goal is to maintain that weight and, at the same time, increase my cardiovascular health, flexibility, and strength. I'm putting all this in writing, so that ya all can be my support group. With that said, as my entry is entitled ". . . don't judge me; just be proud of my accomplishments." I consider this a journal entry, and if you read the whole thing, you are probably an avid reader with lots of time on your hands. Or, maybe, you just wanted to get to know me A LOT better that you probably did before. Exiting "An Unquiet Mind"--another good read, if you want to know the reason behind my lengthy exposé. Homemade Jam and Candied Figs

I'm not normally the type to play Home Ec'y Becky, but this year I took advantage of the $1/pint blueberries and made a batch of freezer jam with five pints and we devoured the other five pints fresh. You read right--I ain't to the point of canning anything yet! Speaking of homemaking skills, Alex and I also made a batch of candied figs this summer as well. Alex loves fresh figs but is enjoying the candied ones as well. He says they're chewy like raisins. My sister turned her nose up to them, but her little boy Dallin enjoyed smacking his lips chewing on them and kept asking for more!

Potty Time

Potty time is the most frustrating time for me. Alex is the slowest eater on the face of the planet, but he is even slower in the bathroom. He has been a month in underwear, and he's doing fine going potty, even though he waits till the last possible moment and does the pee pee dance while attempting to pull down his pants. Then, after he goes, he lays down on the bathmat in child's pose until the end of time. I have often threatened to take the rug out of the bathroom and he tells me that would make him sad. I either have to sit in there with him and prompt him thru each step in the process or let him hang out in the bathroom (of all places) for a half an hour on the floor before he runs out naked without flushing or washing his hands. So today, I prompted him from the next room while I was on the computer. When he was done, he came into me with wet hands. I asked him if he dried his hands and he said yes. So I go to use the bathroom a little later and find the towel on the counter soaking wet. I asked him to come in the bathroom for a minute and when he came, he said, "What? Did I leave the light on?".

On a different note, he has been waking up to go potty in the middle of the night. I didn't expect him to be nighttime potty trained for a while. Being 8 months pregnant, I really am not in the mood to get up and help him and quite frankly he doesn't want my help because he's a daddy's boy. Dancing frantically, he wouldn't pull his pants down until daddy arrived. So, I just let David take care of these moonlighting activities.

I'm so tired of the hand holding and wish he would just do these things on his own and at a quicker pace. David called him a slow poke last night at his potty time and he said that made him sad. His frowny face is almost as hilarious as his fake laugh when he wants to join in the fun.

Alex's new bedroom

We were shopping one day and I decided to update Alex's bedroom. Kirstin decorated his bedroom when he was in a crib with a Classic Pooh theme that I already had been collecting. But since his move to his big boy bed, he's had kind of a mismatch of things. So I let Alex pick out a theme at the store and he chose cars and trucks. I changed his Pooh drapes to to cars and trucks, along with his bedding. Alex likes his newly revamped big boy room.

August 1, 2003 I probably found this picture on the web looking for info on poisonous plants for my girls camp lesson on edible and poisonous plants. I miss girls camp. I think they assigned that lesson to me every year after I took the class on field botany from PCC. Then the last year I went, the lady that did the cooking class had moved so they asked me to do that one. Just because I got a degree in Family Consumer Science doesn't mean I know how to do dutch oven cooking. I bought a dutch oven kit at Costco and practiced in my backyard with David's help. Cornbread and Chili. yum. Fun memories.

Protect Marriage-Vote Yes on Prop 8 and spread the word

A fireside was broadcast last night concerning Proposition 8 that is going to be voted on in California. We were encouraged to make our support known any way we can... they recommended blogging about it and even putting it on facebook.

I am in full support of Prop 8. We as a society need to protect the sacred union of a man and woman. We want to protect the integrity of our families. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and we cannot allow that sacred ordinance to be defiled.
Spread the word to vote Yes on Prop 8 on Nov 4th.

I was worried Alex wouldn't like the figs this year as much as he did last year. They just came in on our tree so I reintroduced him to this much loved but forgotten fruit. He had no problem acquiring his new found love for figs and asked "More figs please." Last year he ate one with his breakfast, now he eats two each morning.

Alex's Birthday

Alex had a great birthday. We celebrated it in segments, so he really had many great birthday activities. He first got an early birthday present in the mail from Grandma and Grandpa Tarbox. He enjoys pushing his garbage truck all over the house and picking up more than the just the trash cans provided to carry around. He sees the big trucks on the streets and gets really excited and exclaims "trash truck" or "garbage truck" as they pass on by.We went to Utah to visit family and he got some cute new outfits from Kirstin, Steve, Isaac and Dallin, as well as his favorite California aunt, Erin who he got to model it for on Independence day when we were back at home.
Oma and Opa surprised Alex with a birthday party and we celebrated with them and the Jachmann family-Rob, Susan, Christina, Wil, and Arianna. He got a dinosaur and soccer shirt from them. He now spends time running around saying "dinosaur-raarr" with his claws up pretending to be one. Oma and Opa gave him clothes, books, and a new race track which he loves playing with. He enjoys his quiet moments looking at his new books and blowing out the candles on the one book over and over again.

We had a small celebration at home with cupcakes and Erin over. Dad came home early and we went over to the park to play while we waited for Erin and the pizza to arrive. Alex loves pizza and calls everything else that remotely looks and tastes like pizza--pizza. It's hard for a two year old to say quesadilla or grilled cheese sandwich anyway, although I'm working on teaching him. He got a step stool for the potty room, pajamas, puzzles, and a Harold the helicopter to add to his train collection. He has always enjoyed going to sit on his recently purchased potty seat but now that he has his Elmo stool, he's in there several times a day sitting on his potty and being more successful in learning to go to the bathroom on the potty. His helicopter is now his favorite thing to play with over at the train set and he has already mastered the puzzles we thought would be too hard for him. They have sounds that tell you the shapes when you put them in the corresponding spot. The other has lights and sounds when you complete each emergency vehicle-police car, ambulance, firetruck.

We went out last weekend and got a babysitter, and even his babysitter brought over a birthday surprise. She got him a Pooh and Tigger puzzle, a Thomas the train coloring book, crayons, and story book. She knows him so well. He is coloring more often now that he has his Thomas and friends pages to color on.

Utah Trip

We just got back from Utah. We were able to see all our immediate family that lives there. We stayed with Rob, Susan, Christina, Wil, and Arianna in Logan. We had a overnighter in Eden (Pineview Reservoir) with Brett, Lydia, Sean, and Ian; Steve, Kirstin, Isaac, and Dallin; Grandma and Grandpa Tarbox; and Erin. We went to visit Oma and Opa Jachmann in Salt Lake City. We had a short stay (a week and a half) but we had fun while it lasted. We went to Dinosaur Park in Ogden with Rob's family. We went to the Kangaroo Zoo for Isaac's Birthday. We also went to the new Bountiful Rec Center for a swim. We played games and ate out with all. We watched movies and talked a lot. It was a good time.
